Hello and welcome to the a player matchmaker. I’m here with Ethan May and today we have an interesting topic, the three best ways to find jobs online and offline in 2019 so if you are trying to figure out the job market anyway, well it’s changed since 2018 I can promise you, and about every five to six months it completely changes. Now these things that we’re bringing up, they’re not just crazy off the mark and unusual, however they are things to really concentrate on. So that’s what we’re going to be going over in this, in this topic. And the reason that we think that it’s, it’s valuable information is just because in the tech world, things change year by year in often. And hopefully you’re not someone who jumps jobs every six months. And, and if you are, I’m sorry, I think I just insulted judge, I didn’t mean to.
But if you are a real true, a player will then you’re not jumping jobs every six months. And so it should be a really important topic to learn what are the current trends and what should I focus my time on. We just don’t want people wasting their time. And so we, we’ve got some really great quotes and ideas for you so I want to go ahead and get started with this. Go ahead and kick us off Ethan. Sure. So Tulsa Staffing got stats. I’m done by [inaudible] dot com and there are lots of really good stats about 2019 staffing trends, recruiting trends, all sorts of stuff. But there were a couple of stats that just talk to the really the feel of the market now, which is much very much so an employees market. Uh, but the Labor Department reported a record high of 6.6 million job openings earlier this year in 2019 which is an all time high and US employment.
And that’s, that’s a huge number. And we were in our last podcast talking about how, how strange it is almost that we’ve got that high of a number of job openings, but our unemployment is just so low that we just, Tulsa Staffing don’t have enough employees to fill all these open jobs that we’ve got. And that’s a great thing for employees. And so if you’re out there looking or thinking about switching jobs, it, it’s a really great problem for you to get to take advantage of. But one of the things that you’ll, you’ll, you know, we’re, we’re trying to figure out as employees, and I’m sorry as employers and recruiters is that we’ve got to figure out a way to place these positions, but there’s not enough people. So everyone’s trying to figure that out. And so as a job seeker, you’ve got some good options for yourself and if you really be strategic with how you play, I think it can be a really great thing for you.
Yeah. What you said is very true that Tulsa Staffing as employers really need to find a way to s to really staff these people in an employees market. Um, I mean, talking about employers, um, talents shortage is a real issue. Almost three quarters, 72.8% of employers say that they are having difficulty finding candidates and 45%, almost half of employers on in America are saying that they’re actually concerned that they might not ever find the right candidates. You know, I think that if that were the situation, Ethan in our, an employee, I would, I would really be thinking, listen, I’m in a place right now. I can probably go out and get what I want. Yeah. But what is it that I really, really want? I don’t want to, I don’t want to miss out on a really great opportunity to go after the gold and, and get what I’ve always dreamt of doing.
And so I think this is a really great opportunity for someone to be strategic in their career. Really think about where they would like to be in three, five and 10 years and try to make a move to get there by utilizing, uh, a, a job, a job market where it would, it would give you the opportunity where an employer would take an oppor, take a chance on, bring you in and train you into a field that would be your dream job. Definitely. Yeah. And you know, I’ve got a great quote by Howard Schultz right now and it says hiring people is an art. It’s not a science. And resumes can’t tell you whether someone will be a fit into a company’s culture. I think that’s really true. And as we’re talking today about like what, what are the best ways to find jobs right now and today’s market, that’s really important because again, putting your resume out there isn’t always enough.
That’s just not enough to get a job sometimes. And Tulsa Staffing understand that. Um, and so really it’s more of an art and trying to find the perfect way to do that both online and offline will really be a game changer for you. So let’s start off with the number one thing. The number one thing has been the number one thing for years and years and years. However, the perception of the average job seeker I don’t think is right here. I don’t think there most people are. I don’t think their minds are going here first there. Let’s just be honest. Most people’s minds go when, when I need to go find a job. It used to be the paper that that’s gone. But now, now, well let’s get online. Let’s get online. Let’s see what’s on out there online. Let’s go figure it out. Let’s go.
Well, what we’ve done, previous podcasts, you can get into a big deep, dark black hole of resumes. Cess pool of resumes and you don’t know where it goes. And Tulsa Staffing were talking earlier, this was many weeks ago about the frustrations that people have with this in everyone’s forgetting the number one thing. Don’t ever forget the number one thing. It’s been the number one thing for 10 years. Um, so what is it Ethan? Tell everybody. Tell everybody. Use Your network and tell everyone. The first rule in job searching is tell people that you know that you’re looking for a job. Let me tell you something about the human psyche. I don’t even, I don’t understand this, but it is just, it’s me. I think it’s you and a lot of people are like this. Maybe not everyone, but most people are like this. If someone comes and asks for my advice, Oh man, does that feel good?
I love it. It makes me feel good. Sure. There are. There are books written on how to, how to get, you know, how to get in the graces of a king, you know, way back when in the 14 hundreds they were talking about how to get in the good graces of a king. One way is ask us advice and shut up and listen. Yeah. Well, one of the things that you can do, especially with the power of social networking and the power of that networking, is you can get on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever it is that you do, and just say authentically, hey guys, I’m looking for a job in this area and I could really use your advice or help if you had any for me, art. That is a very humble way of going about it. But you might be surprised at the options that you would get from that one post.
Think about that. Yeah. Oh definitely. I mean, another way of thinking about it as simply nobody can help you if you don’t tell people. I mean, it’s like, again, I’m a huge hockey fan, so one of my favorite quotes, Wayne Gretzky said, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. You know? And so you’re, you’re limiting yourself so much if you’re not just telling people, how can you get help? How can you get a job? And trying to tell them people who are looking for a job. Well, one of the things that I went through when I lost my job, and it had nothing to do with me, we, we literally, we just lost our grant and we’ve been lost our grant in an invalid way. You know, Tulsa Staffing crushed our numbers and I lost my job. I don’t know why I don’t get it, but the, and maybe this was just me, but I felt not, I felt less than everyone else who had a job.
There was something in there that did that. And I think that that happens, not with everyone. I don’t, you know, I don’t think everyone’s going to be like me. Probably. Hopefully not. Hopefully. Yeah. But, but there are a lot of people that are going to feel that way. And so their first reaction is like, well, I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to let everybody know that I’m an employed, you know, that they’re going to have this certain perception about me. And I really think that the, the general opinion of almost everyone is going to be the exact opposite. If you handle it boldly, you boldly asked and you humbly ask, Hey, help me out. What are some good ideas? Do you know of anyone that I should know? And that is the number one way of finding a job for sure. Yeah, I agree.
I think what you’re saying, a lot of people do feel and it’s just pride, you know, it’s just that pride. I don’t want people to know I lost my job for whatever reason. Yeah. Well and, and my wife, well in, in studying it guys have a hard time. You know, a lot of times we want to be the, you know, the, you know, Tulsa Staffing want to provide for our family, that sort of thing. So a lot of guys deal with this probably more. Um, you know, not to, not to single it out. I mean, I’m, you know, every, everyone deals with this a little bit, but you know, just don’t be embarrassed about it and, and just know that most likely people are thinking completely different about that. Let’s move on to rule number two. Rule number two in networking is always try to get introduced to a company.
So if you post it out there and you’re like, hey listen, is there any way that you can help me out? And somebody’s like, well I know Charlie. Well ask for an introduction. Hey, would you mind to introduce him? Your value getting validation from someone who knows someone isn’t instantaneous comfort level. Yeah. For that, especially if they’re the hiring manager. And so if, if they know Charlie and trust Charlie and Charlie recommends, you know, the this person, all of a sudden you have just, you didn’t just get put on top of the resume stack. I mean you, when you elevated yourself away above the top of the resume stack, now you’re being considered, oh yeah. And that can happen off of Facebook posts, Facebook posts, a text message, a phone call, a casual thing you say and passing. And so if you get a, if you get a response to when you tell everyone and, and they don’t give you the exact, you know, oh, all the information that you would really like to have, make sure to approach them.
And ask, you know, if they know of someone in the company hiring, who’s in charge of hiring there, do you happen to know them and, and be careful not to push too far. Yeah, but at the same time ask some really important questions I think. And I think good question asking there is going to be very vital to your success I believe. Yeah. And as an example right now, if we have a hiring managers that we work with and they send us a resume of one of their friends, hey, this is someone I know they’re looking for a job, but it’s not in, you know, medical, medical field like we do. I’m thinking get him something. I don’t care how many resumes I’ve gotten, how many applicants I got. I’ll call them immediately if I, if it’s with a manager that I know and respect, I’m going to call that person right away.
Oh yeah. And it’s less like a, let me call him phone screen them. It’s more, let me call and see when you can come in for an interview. Boom. Right, right. Well, and here, here at trinity is a staffing agency. We do the exact same thing all the time. Um, if we have someone that we really like, what’s the first thing you’re going to go do? If Tulsa Staffing don’t have a job order for it, I will go and I will send that person to all of these other companies that we’ve worked with before that we know that have built good relationships with and just say, hey listen, here’s someone. They’re awesome. And if you do a good job as a staffing agency, like what we really strive to do, well then you’ve developed some social equity and some trust and immediately they’re getting interviewed, were able to create positions all the time and sometimes just because we met the right person.
So do not ever forget that. I think that’s the most powerful thing that you can do when you’re, when you’re recruiting. So you know, why is it always better to get introduced? Well, anytime you can get introduced directly to the company, you’re hiring manger, you’re going to have a much higher chance of getting the interview. That’s the big thing. I think your percentage of chances of getting an interview, um, and you might even skip the conversation with the recruiter and go directly to the hiring manager, which is what we do a lot. But especially if you know of someone who’s a manager, they’re going to call directly the manager. Most likely you might get an opportunity to skip the chance with the recruiter, go directly to the hiring manager. When the hiring manager tells the recruiter, I’ve, I’ve met this person, I want to hire them.
Generally it’s done, the, the balls are moving. So let’s, let’s move on to method number two. Method number two is applied directly to targeted companies. You should spend a good portion of your time finding companies that fit what you want. Why will, this is an employee’s market. This is a great market for you to be able to go after exactly what you want. But I think it’s going to take some research in finding what companies are, you know, the that are in your, in your, you know, goals, you know, what, what it is that you’re going after. Yeah. And as a recruiter personally, I can say one of the biggest things that I strive for is I want to get someone hired that’ll stick around. You know, I wanna, I wanna get someone hired that’ll be there for a long time. I don’t want him to, you know, skewed out until after a few weeks.
You know, I mean, we had a stat from dramatical.com that said, um, a total of 31% of recruiters say that the, the quality of the hire is there, measurement for success. Not just getting some in place, but the quality of the hire. And that all starts with, with you, the person looking for a job, finding something that you want to do, a good company you want to be with well are the most quality hires that I think that Tulsa Staffing do oftentimes come from, from positions that are not opened. Yeah. And they’re created. And so when you’re going out and you’re applying to targeted companies, I want to encourage people not to just apply to companies who are hiring, but also consider applying to companies that aren’t, that are not hiring. And Begin, begin getting to know the people that are in there. If you’re working with a recruiter like Ethan, we’ll ask them, is there any chance that you know of someone over at this company?
And if you love this person, you know, hey, I would love to call and ask them if they have an opportunity over there. I think those are some of our best hires that we’ve had is just knowing that we have someone really great and going and trying to use our resources, contacts and network to be able to get them an opportunity over there. Yeah, I agree. What you said, they’re using our resources network, our contacts. Why, why would you? That kind of goes back to our, to the first point Tulsa Staffing said tell everybody you know, why would you not want to utilize other people’s resources? It’s pride. It’s like what you said and, and it we said it and even everyone listening to this, they still are probably going to deal with that a little bit. You know, even knowing that that should not be an issue.
So just real quick before we move on, aim for a mix. Aim for maybe 70% of companies who are hiring in 30% of companies that don’t appear to be hiring. I do recommend that you utilize or recruiter and make sure and utilize their network as well because that can be really, really powerful. The next thing that I wanted to bring up with this is reasons company. My interview you, even if a job wasn’t posted, and we do this all the time, whenever we have somebody great and we’re able to create it like what we were talking about, it’s oftentimes comes when we have employers, they’re planning on posting irrelevant job soon and you just happen to catch them at the right time. You know? And sometimes you might be amazed at how much luck goes with it. You know, it’s it, luck can be a big part of it.
You know, also these companies, they’re growing fast and they want talented people. And so when they have a recruiter that they trust, say, hey listen, I think I’ve got some talented people here. They’re gunna move, especially. Yeah. Touching on that stat, we said earlier that almost half of employers are nurse. They’ll never find the right person if they have recruited recruiter. They trusting like I hear something that we think is awesome. I have, I mean they’d be eager to jump on that.
