The title of this podcast is how to get a job through a staffing agency and how to use them as a resource to get them to work for you. I’m going to be talking about some of those things and then ways that a staffing company can benefit you. We’re going to wrap all of this up if possible. If time allows, we don’t talk too much, which is generally, often the problem. Um, so it, it, listen, if you’re trying, if you’re struggling to find the right position for you or especially if you’re trying to find a job in your note, you know that you’re going to be transitioning into a new career field. Um, so we’re going to go ahead and get started with this, but we’re going to get started with some really important statistics. I’m gonna let, uh, let Ethan, Ethan kick us off with that real quick. Sure. Yeah. We’ve got a study that is done by the American Staffing Association, Asa, and it says that more than 3 million temporary and contract employees work for America staffing company during an average week. Right now, 3 million people just during the average a week. And during the course of a year, America’s staffing companies hire nearly 17 million temporary and contract employees. That is a lot of people. Um, and uh, it’s something that I know it’s kind of interesting, like I, before really coming to work here, I never really even thought much about staffing companies other than, uh, you know, anytime I watch the office was Steve Carell and they make jokes about Ryan being attempt from the temp agency.
That was about the extent of what I thought of for staffing companies. But they are huge and there’s so many of them, somebody, people are getting jobs. What said is, I think that, I’ve never thought of it like that, but I think that’s what almost everybody thinks of when they think of staffing firms. But you know, I’m a member of asa who provided these stats and one of the things I learned at a conference that I went to just a couple of weeks ago was that the federal government like strongly relies on the performance of staffing firms to be able to determine which way the economy is going to like, it’s that big of an industry. Oh, cool. I didn’t know that. Well, I mean, when you think about it, um, you know, I don’t know how many people are employed. I’m sure that that you could probably look it up and find out how many people are employed in the United States right now.
But of of that 17 million employees are, are being employed, uh, either temporarily or as contract employees or contract to hire, which, which we’re going to go into that here in a minute. 76% work full time, um, comparable to the overall workforce, uh, which is 82%. Um, and then part time, 40 half, 49% of staffing of staffing employees say it’s a way to get a permanent job, which for Trinity Employment Specialists, that is the number one thing that we do. We do very little temp work. Um, most of ours is all contract hire new. Nine out of 10 said that staffing made them more employable because of some of the experiences that they had. And one third 35% were offered a permanent job by a client where they worked on assignment and two thirds, 66% of those accepted those offers as permanent employment. So it, it for us, I would imagine those numbers are way higher.
Yeah. Way, way, way higher. Because that includes, you know, what we do, which is contract to hire work with the, the end game is long term, you know, and so that, that includes that as well as temporary jobs. Um, and you know, don’t get me wrong, there are definitely attempt jobs where you do really well and they want to bring you on full time. And that’s great. You know, but that’s not the, the, um, you know, the, the purpose of those jobs, you know, innately. Um, but yeah, I mean that stuff that you’re saying, I wonder how many people are currently in Pelmeni. Is it, I’m really interested, it’s, well, actually, you know, if you listen to me when I taught Corey, it was the first stat I read, but no, how many people are employed in the United States right now? I’m curious. More than 3 million right now.
A little over 3 million people know how many people are employed throughout the entire United States, not just staff in general. What I’m trying to figure out, I should listen to you. What I’m curious is what percentage of of employees are currently employed at, at staffing firms that that’s what’s, that’s what’s interesting. Um, 153 million people are employed, um, in America right now is what it says. Okay. So we’ve, we’ve got about what, five to 7% of the overall workforce in the United States staffing firms do. So listen, this is not a new thing. It’s not an uncommon thing. Um, and in fact it’s very, very common and it’s probably going to get bigger. Yeah. And so what we’re wanting to show today is the impact that not only this has on the US economy, but how it can help people in their job search. And it’s a free service if you figured out and whenever you go to get, you know, to find a job.
One of the number one things I recommend to people is to get as many systems working for you as possible. And you can use these systems like indeed career builder, Monster, Ziprecruiter, each one of these things. If you set it upright and you put in, you intentionally put the time in, you can get it working for you like an employee. So you get all these systems working for you when you’re not even doing anything. How great is that? But when you can take it a step further when you get into a staffing firms. So we’re gonna be talking about that here in a minute. Yeah. You know, we’ve got a couple of quotes I like about staffing. You know, one of them is by Robert half. It says a time spent on hiring is time well spent and I think that really applies as well when it comes to the job seeker.
Um, you know, so far to paraphrase that and applied to the job seeker, I would say a time spent networking time spent looking for jobs. Timespan being proactive in your job search is time. Very, very well spent. I think that includes times where you reach out to staffing companies and you’ll work through them a little bit. One of the things that I love about trinity is we try to put our Tulsa Staffing biggest emphasis on quality. And so I love, I love this stat that are not as stat, but, uh, it was a quote by um, uh, saying that quality is not an act, it’s a habit. And that’s what we pride ourselves on is creating the habit of, of doing only qualm, only quality. And that was an Aristotle quote, my man, wow, what’s, what’s crazy is I need no, I need to go get glasses because I couldn’t read, I couldn’t read the bottom part of it.
It wasn’t theirs it out. Right. Nice. Yeah, that’s true. Quality is definitely not an act as a habit. And, um, and so, and I think, I mean as well, man, I’m just going to keep paraphrasing quotes, but not only is like, as job, you know, employers are as a staffing company is finding quality habit. Um, but when it needs to be a habit, um, for the job seeker is that proactivity and, and like you said, utilizing all your resources, why would you not? So let’s, let’s get into the specifics of this because there’s so much here that, you know, I want to share and I want to do it effectively and efficiently. I’m a job seeker can use a staffing agency to find a wide variety of jobs, including permanent jobs, temporary jobs in a number of industries. I think that using a staffing firm, if you feel like you’re in the wrong field and you’re wanting to transition your skills, having a good recruiter there for you is really, really important.
But the, the, uh, staffing from the way that works at a staffing agency, companies pay the agency to find employees for them. Job Seekers can apply to specific jobs through the staffing agency, or they can simply contact the staffing agency to look for a job. The agency interviews to job seekers in places them in the appropriate positions. Typically the agency then pays the selected candidate to work for the client company. If the company decides to hire the job seeker permanently, the staffing agency will no longer pay the a job seeker and the employee will instead become a paid by the, by the company that they were working for. Um, and so the benefits to using a staffing firm, one, it’s free, it doesn’t cost you anything. And you get to work with a recruiter. If you find the right recruiter, they can help you to be able to transition skills and highlight the skills that, that you do have, that maybe they would do a much better job doing that in person than your Tulsa Staffing resume would.
Um, and they can be, they can become an advocate for you, but think about it. They’re going to work for you for free. And so it’s really important that you treat your recruiter well enough and get them to want to work for you for free. And when you do that, you can open yourself up to a wide variety of all sorts of jobs. Oh yeah. And you know, I tell people this in interviews all the time, if they’ve never worked with the Salmon Company, I’m not quite sure how it works, but I touched that on that exact same topic of listen, like while you’re looking for a job, I also am looking for a job for you. That is my full time job. My full time job is helping you find a job. And every, every week we create positions for the right candidate. Just by contacting the people that trust us and say, hey listen, we met with someone that I really think that you would like.
I did that today. I’d have said, listen, I know this is somebody great there. You don’t have a job posted for it. But in the small chance that you might be looking for someone or know that you will be soon, um, and I don’t know where it’s going to go, but we threw it out there and we, we do that all the time. So it’s free. Um, staffing companies do the job searching for you, which is, which is a huge benefit. There’s a variety of different kinds of jobs. And so each different staffing agency specializes in different industries. You need to get to know what are those industries? So you, you, it’s, it’s important to be able to check and see what, what is, what does the staffing firms specialize in? Well, one of the ways that you can do that is go to their website and see what jobs they’re posting.
That’ll tell you real quick what they, what they specialize in. And, and a lot of staffing firms, if you, you know, if you contact them, a lot of people are quick to say, I’ve noticed this in, and even us to some extent can become, you know, we can sound like we’re too scattered, you know? Uh, and, and those, you know, they’ll say we’re all things to all people. Make sure that you find some that are really specialized. You know, there are definitely some things that were very specialized and it’s what we’re good at and it’s what we do. And you ought to be able to determine that by going to our Tulsa Staffing website and seeing what jobs were posting. Um, and they’re, they’re often benefits with the staffing firm. If you work for a staffing firm for after, uh, after 90 days, almost any of them are going to offer you benefits.
So there’s benefits there and they often can give you feedback. So if you are curious and um, and sorry, I’ve lost my train of thought, but if, if you’re, if you’re trying to figure out why did I not get that job now I’m curious what went wrong? Well that can oftentimes be, uh, a great way for you to figure it out. Sure. And also, you know, just the interviewing process is something that just so many people really, really hate and it makes them really, really nervous. Corey, I think you and I have joked and talked about how interviewing process for us wasn’t really ever an issue. You know, like we were confident in that. We kind of thrived in that. For some people, man, that is the most nerve racking experience ever. And so going through a staffing company, you’ll recruiter, we’ll help you. And I do that all the time when people come in and they’re nervous about their interview or you know, have their resumes or you know, what should I, how can I best prepare for just the way they explain the why they left each position at all times.
They reveal stuff in there. I’m like, man, you ought not to say that, that’s for sure. Or it’s just a little things they come across and be like, hey listen, you know, when you go in for the interview, like I love what you said, but like try and maybe talk just a little bit less about, you know, your, your old boss. I know it didn’t end well, but maybe just, you know, tone it down a little bit flatter and little things like that. People like, wow, thank you. Like, you know, in, and you’ll be doing things in interviews or in the process that you maybe don’t even realize that you’re doing and your recruiter can help you through that. It’s incredibly helpful. Well, everybody who went to college who had to take the hated, um, communications class or the public speaking class, you started learning how many nervous ticks people had.
Yes. And a lot of people do that in interviews, you know, and they don’t have any idea that they’re doing it and they sure look nervous or just ill prepared and when it throws the interviewer off that they can’t take you seriously enough that that’s really sad that that happens. Yeah, definitely. And again, it’s little things that aren’t always a big deal, but they just help, you know, like if I have candidate yesterday was just swiveling back and forth in the chair, the whole interview and I could tell it was just cause you know, she was nervous but slow things like that couldn’t get your mind off of it. It was so distracting for me cause I was watching our Tulsa Staffing swivel back and forth for 30 minutes. But things like that, you know, your, your recruiter is on your team always, you know, um, the, the, the types of jobs that are available.
I want to go over these real quick. It’s only gonna take a couple of minutes. Um, first is temporary jobs. That’s pretty self explanatory. Everybody knows what that is. It’s not meant to be a permanent, um, it’s just a temporary job. Your staffing agencies should be very, very honest, open and honest with you about it. So you don’t make a decision that would throw you off of your job search, but basically you’re going to work there for a short period of time or sometimes it’s the long period of time, but you just know that it’s not permanent. Um, and so that’s a temporary job. The next is a temp to hire or contract hires. The way that we, we like to say here and um, that is probably 90% of what we do and that is, we know it’s intended to be permanent, but it’s a try before you buy options.
So the, the candidate would go work there with the full intention that if everything goes well, this is going to turn into a permanent position and uh, this, this you are likely going to be on that person’s payroll or that that company’s payroll, um, in a certain allotted amount of time. The next is permanent jobs. That is you are recruited and you go to work there for that company permanently, immediately. And so you, you never have any kind of interaction with the staffing agency other than the fact that you are introduced by them. And sometimes the offer we’ll go through the staffing agency or they’ll do some of the negotiating, uh, using the recruiter through the staffing agency. And the next thing that I want to wrap up with is how to find the right staffing agency for you. I think this is really important because every staffing agency has different things that they’re interested in.
Um, and so you, you want to be able to find the right staffing agency for, for yourself. Look, just look, we went over it a little bit. Look for the top of positions they are and make sure that they’re in line with what it is that you do. Um, but all of this is all for naught if you can’t get a job to and see. So we’re going to share some things with you. That is that we run into those problems all the time. You do these things, Ethan will be able to talk about it pretty, pretty, uh, directly. But the number one thing is treat it like a real interview. We have a lot of people that don’t, that here big is every land interview. Yeah. I’m sorry not to interrupt you. That’s just a big thing man. You know, I, I can’t tell you how many people come in and they’re just like, you can tell they’re checked out.
You know, they come in, they’re wearing shorts and a tee shirt and they slouch in their thing. They just kind of want the info, want to know what the company’s name, Ms. Lynn, go talk to that company. And then they want to talk to me really? And because they think it’s not really an interview, but I have just as much actually if not more say and whether they get hired or not because I’m the one that decides whether or not I should send them over to our Tulsa Staffing clients. And one of the things that you ought to consider is the people that are hiring us, they’re the people that can actually afford to hire us. So those are likely going to be your more predominant companies. Here’s another thing, some of, well I would almost say most of the companies that hire us, they don’t post it outside.
They want. Now, some do, but most just give it to us and say fill it for us. And these are some companies that are really good solid companies. They just don’t want to deal with the recruiting aspect. Yeah, it’s expensive. They don’t have the 60,000, you know, however, however much it costs to hire and retain a full time recruiter at, at all times, you know, especially for some of these large corporations. And so it’s really important for you to, uh, to make sure to remember that. The second thing is be honest, um, to tell stories about how, about how people you’ve caught people lying over just a few weeks ago, I had a guy that I interviewed, um, for a welder position and you know, he came in and uh, we were talking about the welding job then I was asking him all kinds of welding he does, you know, and I said, you know, we’ve got um, you know, or, or something for heat exchange or pressure, professional welders, welders and can you do that?
Oh yeah, no, definitely. I had done that for years. Years, years. Okay, cool. And he knew the lingo. He knew the talk. I sent him out for an interview in a weld test. He gets there for the weld test and they say, okay, sweet. So we’re going to be doing, you know, this kind of Weldon go and get started. And he looks at him and he says, I’ll be honest, I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m a, I’m a hard worker. I can learn fast and just like hit me. He, he bold faced, lied to me that whole time. You know what I mean? And uh, and got there and immediately like that guy when I heard that done, he is in our Tulsa Staffing system is do not ever work with this guy again. Um, all the connections that I have made in that industry, the guys that he just went and met with, I bet if they’ve got friends in the welding industry who hear about this guy, they’re going to tell him, Hey, don’t hire that guy.
He’s a liar. You know? And that’s an extreme obviously. But, um, even the little tiny things don’t lie about, you know, your Tulsa Staffing abilities and what you can do because you know what’s gonna happen is we’re going to try and send you out for a job and you’re gonna make a fool of yourself. You’re gonna make full us. Yeah. The, the next thing is keep an open mind. Remember that a staffing agency has a lot of different options for you. And you might come in thinking that you’re, you’re applying for another job or one job and then just that day they had something come in that really kind of fit you. And so having an open mind and then giving, you know, letting the recruiter know exactly what you’re looking for, that I get it there. The staffing firms sometimes have a bad reputation as trying to push people to take a job just so the staffing company can make money.
But if you get the right staffing firm, they’re going to really truly look out for your best interest and if you’ll let them know exactly what you’re looking for, um, they’ll really try to help you and they’ll, they might pose though an opportunity that would be a great opportunity for you. We have someone here that came and said, listen, I just want to be a front office person and they’re now our Tulsa Staffing best sales person I’ve ever heard. Yeah, I’ve, you know, um, the, the next thing is, is make sure and follow up, send a email or handwritten note thanking the interviewer that’s going to get their attention. Amedion um, and then just following up saying, hey, have you heard of anything? And keeping yourself in their mind is really important. Remember that staffing firms meet with a ton of people and sometimes just keeping you in their mind.
You know, we, we have some recruiters here that their memory is just impeccable. They remember everything. I was not one of those people. Um, but I, but I had the drive ability and influence to get people in places. And so when they would call and remind me or if they just showed me that they were interested, those were oftentimes the people that I would go to bat for. But sometimes people would call, I’d, I’d interviewed them two or three months ago and they’d called me and said, hey, is there any chance you’ve had something come up? And I’m like, just did. And I liked him. Yeah. And I’d forgotten about them cause there’s been a little bit sure. And that was, that was a great, great way though. I was able to get jobs for people. So sometimes that happened three and fours year, years later, hey, you met with me, I really liked you.
Is there any chance yet? Got Something. Yes. You know, and that, and that happens a lot. So be persistent, but also be patient. Now, keeping in mind how many people, uh, people, uh, that you know, that recruiters deal with. I had a guy that was calling me like every day, last week, one to here and finally after about three, four or five days in that he called me. I said, you know, man, hey buddy, you know, call him for a checkup. And he literally said, man, sorry, I’m, I’m probably calling you more than your girlfriend calls you, but I just really want a job, man. That dude, is that not the person you really wish that you could go? Definitely find something for it. Yeah. So the, these are some things that can help you find a job using a staffing agency.
