Cory Minter: Hi, my name is Cory Minter. I’m president of Trinity Employment Specialists. Trinity is a Tulsa staffing company. We specialize in staffing for the medical field, and one of the key positions that we recruit for regularly is an LPN for mainly our hospitals and our clinics. We always struggle trying to find good, quality LPNs. LPNs are going to be utilized primarily, at least in the Tulsa market they are, they’re utilized in the specialty clinics to be able to offer a little bit more services that they can provide the patient, from a legal stand of point.
They’ll be able to administer medication and certain things that a medical assistant might not be able to do. It’s not really worth it for them to hire an RN to be able to do that. What has happened is that there’s been a little bit of a shortage of LPNs in the Oklahoma area, in general. Because of that, it’s very difficult to find people who have specialty type of experience, and it’s something that Trinity really specializes in doing. It’s not something that’s very easy for us to recruit for, in fact it’s quite difficult, but it’s something that we have had a proven record of being able to do for not only our hospitals, but our major medical clinics Tulsa staffing.
LPNs are in between a medical assistant and an RN. They function very similar to a medical assistant with some flexibility in being able to do some things within the clinic that a medical assistant wouldn’t be able to. That’s why our hospitals are utilizing these positions so often. In our area, there was a drastic change in how many LPNs were going to school. Still, it’s kind of that way where we don’t have a lot of LPNs, we have a lot of RNs. Students are trying to go and get their RN license, rather than trying to get their LPN license, and those that do go get their LPN license, they don’t even stop to work as an LPN. They get their LPN license and go straight into school to get their RN license.
It has become pretty difficult to be able to find good, quality LPNs to staff for some of these positions. There are many LPNs that are available in the home health care type of field but we’re really trying to find someone with clinical type of experience. That’s a big reason why it’s difficult to find LPNs, is because a big number of them are in the home healthcare type of industry, so we are always seeking for this.
