Cory Minter: Hi, my name is Cory Minter and I’m president of Trinity Employment Specialists and I want to talk just real quickly about one of the positions that we are constantly recruiting for. Trinity is a Tulsa staffing company and we specialize in staffing in both Oakland city and Tulsa markets. We really try to focus on accounting and banking, customer service and we have several different clients in those top of areas. They’ll always look and ask us to try to find an administrative assistant for them and so that’s something that we’re working on trying to fill at the moment. Trying to find someone who is a good assistant is very difficult to find, I’ve noticed.
In having myself experience with different people and, of course, we’ve been in business for about 10 years now and I myself, I’ve had, in those 10 years, probably about four different assistants, something like that in Tulsa staffing. I’ve noticed that sometimes you just click with individuals and sometimes you just don’t. When you do it’s very much of a sink top thing, where you work close enough with one another that you really understand each other. But really what you have to have is, you have to have somebody who loves and knows how to be assertive, but at the same time they do not mind being a servant. Another thing is that it goes the same way sometimes with, I guess, the person that was in my role that was the boss. You need to know when, also, to be a servant to your assistant at the right times. Of course, you’re not going to be handling everything, but they need to know that you’ve got their back and you need to know that they’ve got yours. Some of the things that I’ve noticed in hiring assistants and these were individuals that I probably should have released earlier and it was people who were really, really great at what they did. When it came to the job function, they were really, really great, but when it came to who they were looking out for, someone who is really, really great at what they do job test wise, but all they do is look out for themselves, and I guess they are takers. In life you have different kinds of people, you have people who go around and they do what they can to try to help other people, we would call them givers. Then you have other people that go around and they look for every opportunity that they can to take. To take everything they can and so I’ve noticed this with people and these are people that just do not fit very well on our team and that is, that they take our policies and procedures or they take what our vacation requirements are and they do everything they can to go over that line with whatever it is in Tulsa staffing.
It doesn’t matter what the scenario is and sometimes they’re just asking to see if they know what the policy is, but they just ask, “I know the policy is this but can we just do this.” And if you give one ounce to someone like that, they will take 25 gallons or if you give an inch, they’re going to take a mile. I’ve noticed that if you are going to hire an assistant that it’s very, very important to one, if you notice this type of behavior earlier on to cut your ties and release that individual, because they may be great at whatever it is that they do, but of course I’m speaking from some of the experience now. They’re great at what they do, but they are always going to be figuring out an angle to try to get something what they want. I’m sure that if you are a manager, you’re very familiar with this type of behavior, but it’s something that has always been important to me as a leader, as one of the top leaders. I make sure that I’m a servant also to the people that are beneath me on the organizational chart. It’s really counterproductive to hire someone that’s an assistant and they believe that they are above you. Earlier on in my career it took me a long time to try to figure that out. It was just a big, long process for me and to be honest with you, I had a lot of help from one of my mentors saying, “Stop it” and that helped me a lot. But for this particular administrative assistant we were trying to find someone who is great on the phone, who can answer high volume phone calls, who can schedule appointments, they’re great with computer skills, they write professional e-mails, they’re very organized, are multitasking and we need to find somebody who can fill in for the office manager whenever they’re out Tulsa staffing.
We’re also trying to find someone who is an A player and not only that they know how to be a servant and they know how to have a good healthy balance of being a giver versus a taker, but we’re trying to find someone who also is a great team player. They lean in towards positivity. They’re always trying to figure out ways to make things better. When there is downtime, they’re looking for areas to try to help and find some kind of contribution, those are your A players. You’ll also know you’re A players because they tend to do double the work of anyone else in your organization, and these are the type of people that we want to try to staff for the different companies that we work with. We’ve been in business for about 10 years now, and one of the main reasons why we have been so successful, is because we truly want to just provide exceptional talent, quality over quantity. That’s something that we always say, “We want to do quality over quantity” and a lot of different staffing organizations in the Tulsa market, they are the exact opposite. Tulsa staffing They will do quantity over quality and it has led to a big misunderstanding with a lot of people in the Tulsa market at what staffing does. At Trinity, we want to make sure that we change that perception about staffing agencies. Over the last three years we’ve been one of Tulsa’s top 40 fastest growing companies and we’re not able to announce it yet, but we just won a National Award with a top level, one of the top places that you could be recognized in. It’s going to be announced later this month, but that’s how we’ve been able to do that, is putting quality over quantity, doing the right thing and just allowing God to watch over us and provide for us Tulsa staffing.
